Elevate your GCP infrastructure with VPC Firewall Rules using Cloudshot

VPC Firewall Rules:

  • It Act as a distributed firewall that protects your Virtual Private Cloud resources
  • It Control both incoming and outgoing traffic
  • Are stateful: if a connection is allowed, return traffic is automatically allowed
  • Applied at the instance level, even though rules are defined at the network level
  • These rules specify what traffic is allowed or denied based on factors like IP addresses, ports, and protocols.

Steps:

  1. Select an GCP instance in the Cloudshot interface.
  2. Right-click on that instance.
  3. Click on 'Firewall Security Rules'.
  4. The following screen will appear here.
  • RDP access rule (meghavpc-allow-rdp):
    • Allows UDP port 23 (RDP)
    • Priority 65534 (default priority)
    • Source IP 0.0.0.0/0 (allows all IPs)
  • SSH access rule (meghavpc-allow-ssh):
    • Allows TCP port 22 (SSH)
    • Priority 65534
    • Source IP 0.0.0.0/0
  • Custom rules (pratiktest1 and shubhamtesting):
    • Lower priority (1000)
    • More restricted source range (0.0.0.0/32)
    • Various ports (UDP 67, TCP 80, UDP 85)
  • Action buttons: Each rule has edit and delete options
  • Each rule specifies which protocols and ports are allowed, and from which IP ranges traffic can come.
  • The firewall is stateful, meaning if an incoming connection is allowed, the corresponding outgoing traffic is automatically permitted.
  • When you create firewall rules, they're applied automatically to all instances in your Virtual Private Cloud network. Each rule has specific components like direction (ingress/egress), priority (1-65534), and actions (allow/deny). The rules are processed in order of priority, with lower numbers having higher priority.
